The police on Tuesday arraigned two men, Collins Abuchi, 29, and Usman Umaru, 25, before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged stealing and recieving stolen items.

The defendants are standing trial before Magistrate L.K.J Layeni, on a three-counts charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen items.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, ASP Simon Uche, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Jan. 27 at Alaba International Market in Ojo.

Uche alleged that the first defendant, conspired with others now at large, to steal items, which included four cartons of phone accessories valued N2.65 million.

“Other stolen items are one Samsung android phone valued N150,000; and a cash sum of N20,000, all valued at N2.82 million belonging to one Mr Precious Asiegbu, the complainant.

“Meanwhile, the second defendant (Umaru) received the items, knowing that same were stolen goods,” the prosecutor said.

Uche said that both defendants were eventually arrested following police investigations.

According to him, the offences contravene the provisions of Section 287, 328, and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Layeni granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until March 7 for hearing.
