Benue Queens Football Club of Makurdi is hopeful of avoiding relegation in their debut in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season.

The team, is currently bottom of Group B, without a point after seven games with the first stanza of the season concluded.

The league is on mid-season break and is expected to resume on March 19, with seven more games to be played per team.

Meanwhile, Imoter Une, media officer of the team, disclosed to news men on Friday, the reasons behind the team’s poor outing in the league.

“This is our first time in the NWFL Premiership. The league is quite intense and competitive compared to the NWFL Championship where we used to be.

“We have also faced some challenges with regards to sponsorships. We are hopeful that sponsors would come to support the team, which will eventually translate to better results on the pitch.

“Some of our players joined other clubs but we are also finalising the paper work of more players to boost our squad ahead of the second stanza of the league.

“We are working very hard and training rigorously even though the league is on break, because we want to ensure we remain in the league,’’ Une noted.

A total of 16 teams, grouped into two, are competing in the league.
