How Nigeria can curtail cybercrimes- Experts
We should not say that this is just the responsibility of the government,;
Some government officials in the cybersecurity space have urged all Nigerians to join in the fight against internet-related crimes in the country.
They told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that it was only when all hands at on the deck that cybercrimes would be drastically reduced.
CSP Bob Steven, Interpol, Abuja, said that the key to avoiding cyber scams was not to be greedy and cautious when dealing with online business opportunities.
Steven said that as technology continued to evolve, it was essential for individuals to be aware of associated risks and advised Nigerians take necessary precautions to avoid falling victims to cyber scams.
“For me as a person, my personal philosophy about it is `do not be greedy`. The moment you are greedy and you want to make it fast you become vulnerable.
“Your ability to restrain yourself, your ability to put off instant, your ability to postpone gratification is very helpful to avert being scammed,” he said.
Mr Hakeem Lasisi, Chief Superintendent, Cybercrime Section of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said that Cybercrime Act needed to be reviewed to include drastic measures for offenders.
He said that mentorship and internship opportunities for young Nigerians interested in cybersecurity careers was also key to addressing that the challenge.
He also emphasised the need for stakeholders to cooperate in providing mentorship platforms and internship opportunities to help youths to develop the skills required to succeed in the field.
He encouraged young people interested in cybersecurity careers to reach out to organisations such as the EFCC for mentorship and internship opportunities.
“We should not say that this is just the responsibility of the government,’’ he said.
