A 30-year-old man, Michael Ojo, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged involvement in cultism and breach of public peace.
The defendant, whose address was not disclosed, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and membership of an unlawful society.
The prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant and others still at large committed the offences on Jan. 18, at about 1.00 p.m. in the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos.
She alleged that the defendant engaged in activities of an unlawful society in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.
“The defendant is a member of the Eiye Confraternity, a group proscribed under the laws of Lagos State,” she said.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
She added that they also contravene Section 2(3)(a), (b), (c) and (d) of the Unlawful Societies (Prohibition) and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Mr L.A. Owolabi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with responsible sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned until April 1 for further hearing.
