WHAT IS SCHOOL CULTURE?
The school is a formal organization with laid down rules and regulations guiding the operation of human and material resources and the school culture is the heartbeat of such operations. It reflects vividly in the staff, students the school values, beliefs and environment. A school is a platform for producing students whom are worthy in character and learning. According to Amadi, (2019). According to Fisher, (2020). The school culture comprises of all the attitudes, expected behaviors and values that influences the school activities.
As important as culture is to any school it can be positive or negative. Negative in the sense that their values, norms, and beliefs are never in the best interest of the students, staff and the entire school. (In terms of Welfare, growth and development). It hampers proper teaching and learning process, it completely displaces good conduct, discipline because it sees no reason for them. Some examples of such culture are: Emphasis on brand image instead of product image, poor communication process, negatively skewed policies which results to hostility. According to Epitropoulo (2019).
Positive Culture. This is the complete opposite of the former. It is balanced, it creates a healthy, tension and rancor free learning environment, it encourages and promotes a healthy relationship between students, staff, the school and the host community. Positive culture is safe, conducive and provides supportive environment for both staff and students which will directly or indirectly translate in no small measure in the academic performance and achievements among students. Elements of a school culture in this context are the physical environment, the rules and regulations, the attitude of staff and students, school ranking , what the school is known for, mode of dressing of both staff and students e.t.c.
In conclusion research in education field shows that no sustainable improvement in students results and gaps in achievement can be filled until the school managers and staff work on strong norms of behavior because they speak volume about the culture and climate of an educational institution.
