School proprietor recommends essay competitions for students
According to him, the advent of the internet and social media has killed writing culture in students as most of them often rely on text messages and chats to communicate.
The Proprietor of Success Ladder Nursery and Primary School, Ilorin, Mr Isaac Olusegun, has called for inter-school essay competitions to boost writing skills among students.
Olusegun said on Saturday in Ilorin that essay competitions would spur healthy rivalry that could boost writing skills among students.
According to him, the advent of the internet and social media has killed writing culture in students as most of them often rely on text messages and chats to communicate.
"Education stakeholders must organise annual inter-school essay competitions among students with attractive prizes for excellent performances.
"The prizes could include scholarship awards, among others.
"Most students rely so much on their mobile phones and laptops to send messages.
"They use shortcuts where necessary, forgetting how to write a letter of any form," he lamented.
He called on school proprietors to organise essay writing competitions where students could showcase their talents.
"It might not necessarily be an inter-school essay competition. We can start with an inter-class essay competition in order to revive the writing skills in students," he said.
