Dr Rufai Dachi, the Head of Haematology Department, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, has said that voluntary blood donors attain their old age with active bone marrow.
Dachi who stated this on Tuesday in an interview in Bauchi, noted that blood donation has benefits on the lifestyle of human beings.
He said that 99 per-cent of blood donors were men with 90 per-cent for family replacement.
According to him, blood donors live free of infectious diseases such as hepatitis and HIV, as well as derive psychological satisfaction.
He mentions the various types of blood donations to include; voluntary, non-0voluntary, commercial and family replacement.
He said that the blood donation should be done four times a year.
“Blood donation has health benefits of which the donor attains old age with active bone marrow.
“Due to the screening process, a blood donor knows his or her health status with regards to infectious diseases,” he said.
He mentioned that those eligible to donate blood are men and women aged from 18years to 65 years with sufficient blood in their body.
The doctor dispelled the false information that only men were eligible for blood donation.
Dachi said that blood donation is a way of saving human live and called on the public to imbibe the habit of donating blood to save humanity.
