Turkish prosecutors demanded up to nine years in jail on Friday for a police officer for “causing death by negligence” in the case of a 15-year-old boy in 2014.
Berkin Elvan was hit in the head by a tear gas canister during the Gezi Park anti-government protests in Istanbul’s Okmeydani neighbourhood in June 2013.
The police officer, identified only by the initials FD, is separately accused of murder with probable intent, according to private news agency Demiroren.
The police officer is on trial without arrest. The trial at an Istanbul heavy penalty court was adjourned till June 18.
Elvan had been in coma and never regained consciousness before he died in March 2014.
According to his parents, he was in the area to buy bread when he was injured.
Elvan became one of the symbols of the Gezi protests against then- prime minister Recep Erdogan’s plans to redevelop one of the last green spaces in central Istanbul.
