"They stopped us and inquired as to whether we were travelling to Maiduguri. They then began handing out 100,000 old naira notes to each individual, which we found hard to believe."

Suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) have dispersed enormous quantities of old notes to a large number of travelers in the Lake Chad Basin ahead of a new deadline announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The incident happened on Saturday in Guzamala LGA of Borno State, following Mairari village along the Maiduguri/Monguno highway, according to DAILY TRUST.

The Daily Trust in Maiduguri was informed by a source that the ISWAP members were outfitted in military camouflage and operated two gun trucks.

The rebels, according to a local named Bakura Ibrahim, stood by the roadside with bags of old naira notes and took cover under a tree.

We departed Monguno around noon. Since there were no checkpoints in the area as we got closer to Mairari, we were uneasy.

"They stopped us and inquired as to whether we were travelling to Maiduguri. They then began handing out 100,000 old naira notes to each individual, which we found hard to believe. They gave each occupant of the Golf Volkswagen,” Bakura said.

According to a different source, the group simply told us to "go and change it to new naira if you think you can go to their banks and do so; may Allah make it favourable for you."
