Group condemns coup, urges support for President Tinubu’s policies

The Yoruba Patriots’ Movement (YPM) and the Coalition of South-West Civil Societies condemned the call from some quarters for a military takeover of the country’s governance on Monday in Ibadan.

While condemning the call at a President Bola Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda South-West Meeting, several speakers at the event noted that President Bola Tinubu’s policies needed more time and support.

Supreme News reports that the meeting had the theme “A Call for Military Takeover by Opposition: It’s Time to Defend Democracy by Democrats.”.

It aimed at urging citizens to join hands and support President Tinubu in his efforts to build a prosperous future for the country.

Chairman of the occasion and a former Governor of Osun, Chief Bisi Akande, while declaring the meeting open, urged Nigerians to face current challenges in the country in unity.

Akande, who was represented by a former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said this would help to remove hardship from the land within the shortest period.

He urged Nigerians to stand against the move by some people who lost election but are determined to pull down the nation by yearning for a military take-over.

‘The call by some groups for the military to take over will not help the nation, but will only prolong the journey to a prosperous nation.”

Also, the Lead Meeting Paper Presenter, Prof. Olu Aina, while speaking, said citizens must recognise the bigger picture and the long-term benefits that President Tinubu’s reforms would bring to Nigeria.

Aina called on Yoruba elders to remain steadfast in support of Tinubu’s reforms and work together to mitigate the immediate impact on those most affected.

“We must reject any attempt by the misguided to exploit these hardships for political gains.

“In this regard, the call for a military takeover represents not a solution to our current challenges but a regression to a dark and oppressive past.

“As advocates for democracy and champions of progress for which the Yoruba is universally acknowledged, we cannot allow such retrogressive forces to undermine the will of the people and derail our nation’s trajectory towards a brighter future,” he said.

Speaking also, the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Adewale Akanbi, urged citizens to give President Tinubu more time to fix the nation’s economy.

He pointed out that Tinubu inherited multi-faceted challenges which would take some time to address.
