Taiwan on Wednesday announced 549 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients and 12 related deaths, showing no sign of slowdown of the pandemic on the Island.

The newly announced cases by the Central Epidemic Command Centre (CECC) on Wednesday include 372 new domestically transmitted Coronavirus cases and 177 ones belonging to the last few days.

So far, Taiwan, an island of 23.6 million people, has confirmed a total of 9,389 cases since the pandemic began, including 8,195 locally transmitted cases. The related death toll reached 149 on Wednesday.

“The Coronavirus pandemic in Taiwan has not slowed down,’’ CECC Chief Chen Shih-chung told a news conference.

He added that the situation in the northern part of the island remained challenging as more than 460 new cases were found in the capital Taipei and its adjacent New Taipei City.

The CECC said that mass vaccination programmes would be carried out nationwide between June and August, hoping to vaccinate at least 1 million people each week.

The CECC also prioritised frail elderly people and staff members at nursing homes or senior care facilities for vaccination.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, two nursing homes in New Taipei City and Taipei reported deadly COVID-19 clusters, which had resulted in at least seven deaths.
