Taiwan on Thursday reported a new death from COVID-19, with the person affected described as the first death of a foreign patient who received treatment on the island.
According to Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Centre (CECC), the deceased, a British man in his 70s, entered Taiwan on Dec. 18, and tested positive for the coronavirus on Dec. 31.
The CECC advisory specialist panel convener, Chang Shan-chwen, told a news conference that the deceased patient contracted a new coronavirus variant first detected in Britain.
“The senior patient also had cardiovascular disease, and soon became critically ill,’’ Chang said.
On Thursday, Taiwan also announced two new COVID-19 patients, an Indonesian male migrant worker in his 40s and an American woman in her 60s.
As of Thursday, Taiwan, an island of 23.6 million people, reported 919 coronavirus cases, including 75 locally transmitted cases and nine virus-related deaths.
Currently, 71 COVID-19 patients are receiving treatment in hospital in Taiwan.
