Rivers LG to host Inter-ward football competition

Erastus Awortu, Chairman, Andoni Local Government Area in Rivers , said the council has concluded arrangements to host the third edition of an “Inter-Ward Football competition.

Awortu said this on Monday at Ngo, the council’s headquarters at a meeting with the local organising committee of the 2023 edition of the competition.

Awortu said since the inauguration of the competition in 2021, it had served as a veritable platform for peace as well as football development.

“Though initiated by our administration in 2021, I foresee this football platform outliving our tenure because I believe it will continue to encourage young talents to express themselves and be available for selection into Club sides’’, he said.

The council boss urged the organising committee to be fair to avoid conflict which could jeopardise the essence of sports.

Michael Oyet, Chairman, local organising committee of the competition promised to ensure a hitch-free event.

He said that aside the opening and final matches slated for Nov. 4 and Jan. 3 2024 at the Council’s headquarter; other matches are scheduled to hold across various communities of the ward.

Oyet said that the competition tagged ‘2023 Chairman’s Cup,’ would further consolidate on peace, friendships and unity in the area.
