NMMA, AFC partner to grow grassroots Mixed Martial Arts
Victor Akhimien, Technical Director of Nigeria Mixed Martial Arts (NMMA), said on Tuesday that the federation has been mandated to develop the sport at grassroots level.
Supreme news that partnering with AFC World Series to organise a grassroots MMA event is a partnership in progress.
According to him, the future of the sport depends on the number of sponsors willing to collaborate with the federation.
Akhimien said the federation organises several training courses to guide young aspiring fighters, especially those transitioning from kickboxing.
He stressed that growing the sport is their ultimate passion, and they will stop at nothing to nurture young aspiring fighters.
“We are very proud of what AFC World Series is doing and we fully support the MMA brand to make it a huge success.
“Significant funds have gone into this event alone, and we are confident of delivering a top-notch, action-packed spectacle for the audience.
“The fighters selected have been drilled in the sport’s rules and guidelines. It also provides an opportunity to discover new talents,” Akhimien said.
Supreme news reports that after two days of fights, the participants displayed good knowledge of the sport and thrilled fans watching inside the arena.
Some fighters expressed admiration for the organisers for giving them the opportunity to showcase their skills after training hard for the event.
Joseph Jackson, who fought and won in the 65.8kg category, told newsmen he was confident of excelling further in his division.
“I’m here to fight. I have prepared very well and I’m confident I will achieve a lot at the end.
“I don’t fear any opposition. I’m a warrior, well experienced, and will stop at nothing to defeat anyone in my path,” Jackson said.
Similarly, Goodnews John, who lost to Jackson in the 65.8kg, said he was just getting introduced to MMA.
He explained that his speciality was kickboxing, but he was happy to participate in the competition, describing it as an eye-opener.
“It’s my first MMA fight and my first loss. I won’t give up; I’ll work extra hard to reach professional level,” John said.
Moses Kure, from Plateau State, had an outstanding performance, defeating Kenneth Love in a two-minute submission.
Kure told newsmen he was happy to be in the tournament and eager to show his skill and passion for the sport.
He said he was very proud of his victory and looks forward to an exciting career, while Love admitted Kure was the better fighter.
In other contests, Olukolade Oreofe defeated Daniel Folarin in three straight rounds, while Josiah Joseph beat Heaven Jameson by submission in the 65.8kg category.
Supreme news reports the MMA fights, which began on Sept. 11, will end on Sept. 14, with no fewer than 100 fighters competing at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
