Adeyemi to face no sporting consequences for illegal weapon purchase

A legal fine for the attempted illegal possession of weapons will have no sporting consequences for Germany international Karim Adeyemi at Borussia Dortmund, head coach Niko Kovac said on Thursday.

The club wants him to do community work but it will not affect his place in the team.

“It is no reason for me to ban him for the next few weeks,” Kovac told a news conference after talks with the winger.

Adeyemi has revealed that he ordered a so-called “mystery box” on the internet at the start of 2024 which he said he did not know contained items that are not permitted under the weapons laws.

Many months later the package was delivered, and it ended up unopened with the police. He was then given a hefty fine.

Kovac added: “I am not his father but his coach. People should put things into proper perspective.

“Everything has now been said about it. The focus is clearly on the Bundesliga. He will get our full support for that.”

Dortmund host VfB Stuttgart on Saturday having lost four times in a row in the league to the south-west club.

“I can understand that people are bringing this up now. So we should go and win the game,” added Kovac.
