The Rivers State Government has reiterated its commitment to implement policies that will enhance youth development and empowerment.

The Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Ohia Prince-Obi, said this on Tuesday in Port Harcourt while speaking to newsmen on preparations for the 2021 International Youths Day.

He stated that the Gov. Nyesom Wike-led government was committed to initiating programmes that would enhance youth empowerment and development.

“We are committed to implementing programmes that will make our youths to become meaningfully engaged and be self-reliant.”

The commissioner stated that the 2021 edition of the International Youths Day would provide opportunities for stakeholders to brainstorm on how to support the youth.

“ The International Youths Day is an important event, it will enable stakeholders to look at the various challenges facing the youth.

“We have invested hugely in education and sports development, the Real Madrid Academy is a good example of our efforts in this direction,” he said.

Prince-Obi also stated that the state government would soon start its 'one youth one skill project’ aimed at equipping youths with skills for self-reliance.

“This project is a skills’ market that will provide an avenue for training and re-training of youths in the state.

“This project will train our youths to be innovative; it will explore opportunities in agriculture for robust youth empowerment,” he said.

The commissioner urged stakeholders to support the project in the interest of the youth and the wellbeing of the society at large.

The theme for the 2021 edition of the International Youth Day is: “Transforming the Food System: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.
