NiMET forecast: Plant drought-resistant seeds, AFAN advises farmers

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) on Friday advised farmers to cultivate drought-resistant seeds and appropriate crops, for optimal yield during the hot weather.

AFAN’s National President, Mr Kabir Ibrahim, gave the advice in an interview with Newsmen in Lagos, against the backdrop of Thursday’s 2019 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET).

Supreme Magazine gather that the agency had reported a shorter length of the growing season for most parts of the country, with frequent and severe dry spells over the northern region, during the rainy season.

The Minister of State for Aviation, Mr Hadi Sirika, while presenting the prediction, said that the analyses were risk factors for farmers in the affected areas, and suggested carefulness and scientific management.

Sirika urged farmers to keep in touch with NiMET, for advisories and updates within the growing season.

Ibrahim said that the information provided by the agency was very vital for both government and the farmers to adequately prepare for the days ahead.

“This information is handy and farmers will use it to plan their cropping season.

“Such information will also enable us to choose our crop types that will yield in those circumstances.

“That is the whole essence of the information. Farmers will choose the crops and seeds that are drought-resistant, to mitigate the effects,’’ the AFAN chief said.

According to him, the information is vital because the government can now plan on how to stock its reserves and when to release anything food from the reserves.
