As Malaysia battles record coronavirus case numbers and deaths, health officials on Friday gave the go-ahead for Sinopharm and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to be deployed in the country.
The jabs were given conditional approval for emergency use, according to Health Ministry Director-General, Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Around four million Malaysians, of a population of almost 33 million, have been fully vaccinated, with the AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech and Sinovac jabs in use, according to Health Minister Adham Baba.
More than 12,500 new cases of the virus were reported by the ministry on Friday.
Earlier on Thursday, there was a record of 13,215 cases and 110 virus-related deaths within the space of a day.
Around half the new cases were reported in the country’s economic heartlands around Kuala Lumpur, the biggest city, and nearby Selangor.
This week’s daily case numbers had been around three times higher than in mid-May, when the government imposed a third pandemic lockdown.
They are the highest per capita in South-East Asia.
