Ekiti Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Olabimpe Aderiye, has enjoined school principals in the state to maintain a high level of professionalism in their duties.

Aderiye gave the charge on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti while declaring open a one-day training programme for principals and vice principals of public secondary schools in the state.

Supreme reports that the training was organised by the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), in collaboration with a Lagos-based retired banker and philanthropist from Ilupeju Ekiti, Chief Esan Ogunleye.

Aderiye expressed the need for the principals and their deputies to make themselves role models and lay good examples for their students to guarantee a secure future for the youth.

According to her, this is because apart from primarily imparting knowledge on students, other teachers and pupils also watch and emulate the example the school heads set in their day-to-day activities.

Aderiye, who emphasised the importance of making themselves ICT compliant, stressed that the world has gone digital and people should develop themselves to avoid stagnation.

She restated the commitment of the Fayemi-led administration to the training and retraining of teachers towards achieving the goal of ensuring a sustainable development of the education sector.

The commissioner said the government would continue to partner interested individuals and corporate organisations to train and retrain teachers in Ekiti.

Aderiye also stressed the need for teachers to justify the huge investment on them by living up to their responsibilities.

According to her, achieving the desired results depends largely on the cooperation and support of all stakeholders for efforts of government to move the education sector forward.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of TESCOM, Mr Babatunde Abegunde, expressed gratitude to the co-sponsor of the training programme for his donation.

Abegunde said the state government did not relent in ensuring that school teachers remained resolute and operate in conducive environment.

“This is in spite of the prevailing global economic crunch and the dwindling allocation from the federation account,” he said.

Abegunde said the government would expect higher productivity from participants at the end of the training.

He described the programme as a “turn around mechanism” to prepare schools in the state ahead of the new session.

Abegunde highlighted part of the efforts of the present administration to improve the lot of teachers to include payment of running grants.

According to him, the state was far ahead of its counterparts in the South-West on the issue of teachers welfare.

In his remarks, Ogunleye, the co-sponsor of the training programme, described himself as a friend of the state government.

He said he would continue to support the efforts of the state government toward the development of the education sector.

He solicited the support of other well-to-do individuals and corporate organisations in the efforts to improve the education sector.
