10 scavengers docked for nuisance wandering

Osho said that during investigation, the defendants could not give satisfactory account of themselves.

Ten scavengers comprising six adults and four minors were on Wednesday docked in a Grade I Area Court, Karu, Abuja for alleged wandering and constituting nuisance.

The police charged Ahmed Saleh,22; Salisu Yahaya, 20; Nura Munir, 20; Kabiru Ashimu, 20; Musa Abubakar, 18 and Abdul Hamisu, 20 with wanderiing, constituting nuisance and belonging to gang of thieves.

The minors are between 12 and 15 years.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Olanrewaju Osho, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Jan. 26 in Karu area of Abuja.

Osho said the patrol team attached to the Karu Police Station, arrested the defendants while patrolling the area.

He said that during investigation, the defendants could not give satisfactory account of themselves.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 199 and 306 of the Penal Code.


Meanwhile, the Judge, Malam Umar Mayana, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with two sureties in like sum, who must be their leaders and must deposit a valid means of identity.

Mayana further directed that the sureties must write an undertaking stating that the defendants would not parade Karu and its environs again, and their addresses must be verified by the court officers.

He adjourned the case until March 15 for further mention.
