The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched a strategic partnership with the Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, Mr Beloved-Dan Anike, to support the Enugu State Universal Health Coverage Scheme (ESUHCS).
As part of the initiative, the WHO also presented an award to Anike in recognition of his efforts in expanding grassroots healthcare.
The award ceremony took place on Wednesday at the council headquarters in Nkwo-Nike.
WHO South-East Zonal Coordinator, Dr Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, commended the chairman for enrolling more than 5,000 vulnerable residents into the scheme.
He noted that ESUHCS was a key pillar of Gov. Peter Mbah’s health reform agenda.
Igboekwu highlighted that Anike was the first local government chairman in Enugu State to receive such recognition, lauding his inclusive leadership and dedication to health equity.
He also revealed that 99 per cent of the council’s health strategies aligned with WHO priorities, positioning the council as a potential national model for sustainable, community-driven healthcare.
In his response, Anike dedicated the award to Mbah, acknowledging his administration’s transformational impact, particularly through the construction of 260 Type-II Primary Healthcare centres across the state.
“This award is a validation of the governor’s vision and our collective effort to localise that vision,” Anike said.
He reaffirmed Enugu East’s commitment to making Universal Health Coverage a reality.
