The U.S. decision to halt withdrawal of troops from Germany was welcomed by the German Government in Berlin on Friday.

“We have always been convinced that the stationing of U.S. troops in Germany serves European and trans-Atlantic security and is, therefore, in our mutual interest,” the government’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said.

He expressed Germany’s appreciation for decades-long military cooperation with U.S. forces.

On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced a freeze on the planned troop redeployment from Germany, which was announced by his predecessor, Donald Trump, who repeatedly clashed with Berlin over defence spending and other issues.

Trump announced the plan in July 2020, under which a third of the 36,000 U.S. servicemen and women then stationed in Germany were to be sent home or relocated to other European countries.

Biden has put that on ice pending a “global force posture review”.

Seibert said Berlin would be watching closely, adding that how the review would be proceeding would be an internal U.S. issue.
