Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has won the Sun Newspaper’s ‘Governor of the Year Award’, a prestigious honour recognising his outstanding governance achievements.

The award was presented at a ceremony in Lagos Eko Hotels, attended by top government officials and dignitaries, chaired by Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu.

This is contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, in Kano on Sunday.

Alhaji Abdulkareem Zaura received the award on Yusuf’s behalf, describing it as an encouragement to intensify efforts in delivering quality governance.

Zaura described it as a strong encouragement to intensify efforts in delivering quality governance to Kano State.

He said the honour was expected, given Yusuf’s people-oriented policies and visible performance, making him one of the most celebrated Governors in recent history.

Zaura recalled that in 2025, Yusuf received five major education-related awards, including Teacher-Friendly Governor of the Year by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and recognitions from Leadership, Blueprint, and New Telegraph Newspapers.

He added that Yusuf was also honoured as the Labour-Friendly Governor of the Year and Pensioners-Friendly Governor of the Year for clearing over ₦27 billion in pension and gratuity arrears.

According to him, Yusuf had also implemented the ₦71,000 minimum wage, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
