The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) has mourned the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a distinguished statesman and exceptional senior citizen who dedicated his life to serving Nigeria.
The NSCC Director-General, Mrs Omobolanle Akinyemi-Obe, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Media and Communications, Mr Omini Oden, said the organisation was deeply saddened by Buhari’s death.
According to her, the establishment of the NSCC was made possible by the signing of the National Senior Citizens Centre Bill into law by the late President Buhari, a landmark step toward recognising and protecting the rights of older persons in Nigeria.
“This paved the way for the establishment of the NSCC and the subsequent directive to sub-national governments across the country to domesticate the Act.
“Until the Centre Act 2017 was signed, there were no concrete procedures or mechanisms for older persons to participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of development activities that directly impacted their lives,” Akinyemi-Obe stated.
She described Buhari, who died at the age of 82, as an exceptional senior citizen who left behind a legacy of discipline, integrity, and unwavering commitment to national development.
She extended condolences to his family, the government, and the people of Nigeria, praying that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, rewards his noble deeds, and grants him Aljannatul Firdaus.
