Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has urged the Berom people to continue promoting unity in Plateau, describing it as part of their big brother role.
He made the call on Friday in Jos during the Nzem-Berom Cultural Festival themed, ‘Celebrating the Prowess, Gallantry and Resilience of the Berom Woman – Past and Present.’
Supreme news reports that the 2025 festival theme aims to honour Berom women, especially those excelling in their various fields.
Mutfwang, addressing a large crowd, urged the Berom community to remain united and promised to support Plateau’s cultural heritage through his administration’s efforts.
He said the Berom, as a leading ethnic group in the state, must help ensure unity across Plateau.
“I commend the Berom community for this significant initiative recognising the vital role of women not just in Berom communities, but Plateau and Nigeria at large.
“I congratulate today’s female awardees and urge you to keep striving, and mentor the younger generation following in your footsteps,” Mutfwang said.
He further praised the Berom people for their consistent leadership and noted their role as defenders against injustice in the state.
“That is why I encourage you to engage other ethnic groups for a united and indivisible Plateau.
“When Berom community is divided, Plateau suffers. Leaders must ensure both Berom community and the wider Plateau remain united,” the governor said.
Earlier, the Gbong Gwom of Jos, Da Jacob Buba, urged government to hold a state-wide cultural festival annually to foster unity across Plateau.
Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Hajiya Fatima Abbas, praised the Berom for celebrating women and called for sustained peace in the state.
Gov. Kefas Agbu of Taraba chaired the occasion, attended by dignitaries nationwide, including Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson.
Some of the awardees included the Deputy Governor of Plateau, Mrs Josephine Piyo, and Justice Jummai Sankey of the Supreme Court.
Ms Kachollom Daju, a Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Health, was also honoured with an award.
Highlights of the event included cultural displays from Berom communities of Riyom, Jos South, Jos North, and Bokkos LGAs of the Plateau.
