CITAD unveils app to boost reporting on GBV, digital rights

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has inaugurated reportrix a digital application designed to enhance reporting on gender-based violence (GBV), human rights and community development in Kano State.
Executive Director of CITAD, Mr Yunusa Zakari-Ya’u, announced the development on Wednesday in Kano, saying the platform will enable citizens, especially women and youth to safely report incidents and monitor interventions in real time.
He said that the initiative seeks to strengthen accountability, promote transparency and improve responses to issues affecting vulnerable groups in the state.
According to him, many cases of GBV remain unreported due to stigma, fear of exposure and lack of safe channels for victims to speak out.
“You cannot fight what you don’t know. The only way we can understand the extent of GBV is through statistics and data that show the trends.
“Survivors often suffer double jeopardy—trauma and social isolation—because reporting exposes them to stigma. This platform provides a safe, secure and anonymous space for reporting.” he said
He explained that the app also addresses the growing spread of misinformation and fake news, adding that technology has amplified its impact on society, sometimes fueling violence or influencing political outcomes.
“Fake news is no longer just rumour; technology has weaponised it and we want a platform where false information can be reported and debunked before it harms communities,” he said
The CITAD director further said Reportrix will support the protection of digital rights, stressing that citizens should feel safe to express opinions online without fear of arrest or intimidation.
He noted that the organisation had previously rewarded top reporters whose efforts led to the completion of abandoned projects across communities.
Zakari-Ya’u urged community members to use the platform to report violations, adding that silence only perpetuates harmful practices.
He expressed hope that the new application would help build a safer and more accountable society.
