France is set to ban the far-right Turkish nationalist Grey Wolves organisation on its territory, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday.
Darmanin described the organisation as “particularly aggressive’’ and told lawmakers that he would be seeking its dissolution at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
He gave no further reason for the move, but it comes after two anti-Armenian demonstrations by people carrying Turkish flags in the Lyon and Grenoble areas.
Videos of the demonstrations, which came against a background of tension over the war between Armenia and Turkish-backed Azerbaijan, were published online by social media accounts using Grey Wolves symbols.
French media also reported that a monument in Lyon in memory of the 1915 massacres of Armenians in Turkey was defaced with the name of the group at the weekend.
