South Africa and Germany discussed the need for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine war in talks on Tuesday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

"We discussed the conflict in Ukraine and the need for the international community to encourage dialogue.

"Also, we discussed negotiation for a ceasefire and a peaceful negotiation or resolution," Ramaphosa said at a press conference after talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

South Africa has taken a neutral stance on the conflict, refusing to condemn Russia's actions and calling for dialogue between the two countries.

Scholz said Russia's invasion of Ukraine was an important issue to discuss with his South African counterpart.
