China advocates global support for establishment of organisation for Mediation

The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Mao Ning, on Tuesday underscored the need for global support for the establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed).
Mao said this during global regular news conference against the backdrop of the signing ceremony of the Convention on the establishment of IOMed in Hong Kong, China.
She described the establishment of the a IOMed as response to shared need of countries across the world for peace, stability, development that echoes call of today’s world for cooperation and mutual benefit.
According to Mao, in 2022, China and nearly 20 countries with similar positions jointly inaugurated the initiative to establish the IOMed.
“Through concerted efforts, the negotiations on the convention on the establishment of the IOMed have been concluded and all sides agreed to situate its headquarters in Hong Kong, China.
“Almost 60 countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and around 20 international organisations including the UN will send high-level representatives to the signing ceremony on May 30.
“The Global Forum on International Mediation will be held same day in the afternoon.
“To discuss mediation of disputes between States and mediation of disputes between a State, foreign investors and commercial disputes among other issues,” Mao said.
The spokesperson explained mediation to be one of the important measures to settle disputes stipulated in the UN Charter.
She said that as relatively more amicable way to settle disputes, mediation fully respect the will of parties concerned and has unique advantages of greater flexibility, convenience, lower costs and effective implementation.
“It is reflective of the tradition of amity and harmony which is valued in the East that is aimed at settling differences and resolving disputes through mediation.
“The IOMed will be the world’s first intergovernmental legal organisation dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation and will serve as important mechanism in safeguarding purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
“It pools the advantages of all major law systems and will help bring about fairness and equitable global governance on the rule of law.
“We welcome support and participation from more countries in creating the IOMed, to better enable it coordinate with existing international disputes settlement mechanisms.
“To make each other more effective, provide more options, pathways to resolve international disputes through efficient and peaceful means, better safeguard international fairness and justice,” she added.
She further said the Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi would attend the Convention on the Establishment of IOMed in Hong Kong, China.
