Since April 2014, the Ukrainian government has been conducting a military operation against the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in the eastern part of the country bordering Russia.

A 71-year-old woman was injured by the Ukrainian military in the shelling in the Horlivka town of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), DPR's territorial defence headquarters said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, the DPR representative office in the Joint Centre for Control and Coordination of the ceasefire regime (JCCC) said that Ukrainian armed forces fired at Horlivka with 152-millimetre shells and 120-millimetre mortars.

"During the shelling of Horlivka's Nikitovsky district by Ukrainian armed forces, a 1951-born peaceful female citizen, who lived on Pol'ova St. 5, suffered wounds of extremities," the headquarters said in a statement.

Since April 2014, the Ukrainian government has been conducting a military operation against the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in the eastern part of the country bordering Russia.

Prospects for peace had been discussed in various formats with little to no result.

In the early hours of Feb. 24, Russia launched a special operation to demilitarise and "denazify" Ukraine, responding to calls from the Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics for help in countering the aggression of the Ukrainian troops.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the special operation was targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only and the civilian population was not in danger.

Moscow says it had no plans to occupy Ukraine.
