Electrician in court over alleged theft of N5m transformer

An electrician, Musefiu Lawal, 26, who allegedly conspired with others to steal a transformer worth N5 million, on Wednesday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

Lawal, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 20, at 12:40a.m. at Tokunbo, Oke Nla, Ajah, Lagos State.

He said that the electrician conspired with the others still at large to steal the transformer which belonged to the Tokunbo Community.

“Lawal and his accomplices, who came with a vehicle at midnight to cart away the transformer, were sighted by members of a vigilance group.

“The accused was nabbed while his accomplices zoomed away in the vehicle with the transformer,” he said.

The conspiracy and theft respectively contravene Sections 411 and 287 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

They are punishable with two years’ imprisonment and two years’ imprisonment, respectively.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.M. Olumide-Fusika, granted the accused N1 million bail with two sureties in like sum.

The magistrate ordered that one of the sureties must be a relative of the accused and the other a civil servant.

She adjourned the case until Jan. 21, 2019.
