Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday in Doha, in the diplomat’s first visit to the Gulf country since a regional rift erupted in 2017.
Shoukry was carrying a message from Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi to Tamim, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Hafez said.
The letter focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen and develop them as well as prominent regional and international developments, according to the Qatari News Agency.
Shoukry arrived in Doha on Monday and held a meeting with his Qatari counterpart Mohammed bin Abdel-Rahman Al Thani.
He is also taking part in a meeting for the foreign ministers of the Arab League countries in the Qatari capital on Tuesday.
In June 2017, a regional rift began when four Arab countries – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, severed diplomatic, trade and travel ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting Islamist militant groups, an accusation that Doha denies.
The rift continued until the five countries signed a declaration in January ending the row that lasted for three and a half years.
