An educationist, Mr Titus Rotimi, has deplored the neglect of discipline and moral teachings in schools in Nigeria in favour of formal education.

Rotimi, who is the proprietor of a nursery and primary school, in an interview in Ilorin on Friday, said that education should be a mix of the formal academic and moral training.

“Most schools don’t focus on discipline and moral training. They only focus on teaching Mathematics, English, Economics, Fine Arts and Sciences.

“We can see most students now lack discipline. There are some brilliant students who lack discipline and moral ethics because they were not taught.

“There are schools that don’t punish students for misdeeds. Some parents prefer to enroll their children in such schools. They want their children pampered and not punished when wrong,” he said.

The proprietor, however, called on education stakeholders and government at all levels to ensure discipline and moral teachings are returned into the curricula in public and private schools.

He explained that education without discipline was a waste of time and the route to regrets in the future.

“Discipline is part of learning. Stop prioritising academics and relegating moral learning. Everything works together to perfection.

“The future of our children is at stake. Time to teach them morals is right from the basics and not necessarily wait till live teaches them a bitter lesson in the nearest future,’’ he said.
