Indigenes of Rivers studying at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria have called on Gov. Siminalayi Fubara to urgently introduce bursary support, scholarships, and other incentives to ease their education burden.

The students, under the platform of the Rivers Students’ Union, ABU chapter, said the lack of educational support from the state government had made life and learning difficult for them.

The President of the union, Akio Kikpoye, made the appeal during a meeting of the association in Zaria on Monday.

He said said that many students were struggling to cope due to the absence of bursary allowances and scholarships from the state government.

Kikpoye said d that in spite of making several pleas to previous administrations, no effort had been made to assist the Rivers indigenes in ABU, leaving many self-sponsored students financially stranded.

He also lamented that the union's lack of a Secretariat to operate from, a situation he said, was preventing them from organising educational and welfare programmes that would support their members.

He, therefore, appealed to Fubara and other prominent Rivers stakeholders to intervene by instituting bursary allowances, scholarship schemes, and welfare support to encourage academic excellence among Rivers indigenes studying at the ABU.
