Again, FRSC warns motorists as crash occurs on Third Mainland Bridge
The Lagos Sectorof the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has again called for safe driving, especially on the newly reopened Third Mainland Bridge, after an accident occurred on it on Thursday.
A collision involving three vehicles occurred on the bridge on Thursday, the day it was fully reopened to traffic after months of partial closure.
The FRSC described the incident, which involved three vehicles inward on the on the Iyana Oworo axis of the bridge, as an avoidable crash and blamed it on negligence.
The Sector Commander, Mr. Babatunde Farinloye, told the newsmen on Friday in Lagos that the people who were installing an information device did not properly place the caution sign to alert others to the work they were doing.
“The vehicles coming were not concentrating, and this is connected with the attitude of drivers.
,”Driving needs 100 per cent concentration, as with lack of concentration, there is bound to be crash.
“There was no injury, it was just minor damage of vehicle.
“The first one hit the vehicle that was parked on the speed lane and the second one rammed into that one,” he said.
The sector commander advised motorists to drive cautiously, reiterating the need to comply with the 80km per hour speed limit on the bridge.
“FRSC Lagos admonishes motorists not to exceed speed limit because speed indeed thrills but kills.
“Motorists are to obey traffic regulations and rules in order to ensure their safety and that of other road users,” he said.
He stressed the need for motorists and the general public to use the FRSC Emergency Toll-Free Number 122 and the National Emergency Toll-Free Number 121 in case of crashes or any other occurrences that pose a threat to their safety and security.
He emphasised FRSC’s commitment to ensuring a safe motoring environment for all and prompt service delivery in case of any emergency.
“Speeding, aggressive, and distractive driving, as well as driving under influence, remain critical issues that must be collectively addressed,” he said.
He thanked the Federal Government and the Minister of Works, Mr. Dave Umahi, for the rehabilitation work on the bridge, saying it would guarantee quality travel time.
