A bill for a law to provide protection for children in Sokoto State before the State House of Assembly on Thursday passed second reading.

The passage of the bill followed a request by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Leader of the assembly, Alhaji Bello Ambarura (APC-Illela).

According to Ambarura, the bill is an executive bill aimed at ensuring the rights of children are protected and that they are fully trained for the future.

“This bill will enable the government to continue to address any form of violence on children and ensure no child is left out of school.

“As such, its consideration will aid government’s commitment to education and enhance the living standard of children,” he said.

The Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, who presided over the sitting, referred the bill to the Joint House Committee on Judiciary, Justice and Human Rights for scrutiny and recommendation to the assembly.

The committee is to report back to the assembly within two months, with a mandate to co-opt any committee of the house deemed relevant to assist in carrying out the assignment.
