TOPIC: WHAT IS EDUCATION?
Nelson Mandela said “No country can really develop unless its citizens are really educated .Education is the most powerful weapon for change”. Is in line with the Federal Government of Nigeria’s recognition of education as a tool for the development of its citizens, the society and the nation at large, and therefor adopted ‘education’ in its National Policy on Education (NPE); as an instrument par excellence for enhancing national development.(FGN 2013).This same weapon for change according to Mandela means different things to different people .Hence, before we talk about education ,lets talk about what education is not.
WHAT EDUCATION IS NOT:
- Schooling is not education! Some folks believes that enrolling a child in school automatically translates to education. Though the major focus of global education community is on getting children to school, schooling is not the same thing as education. According to lant Pritchett and Reikimini Bajeri a child can be enrolled in a school and not be impacted knowledge wise for reasons such as: overcrowded classrooms, unqualified teachers, environment etc.
- Getting a degree is not necessarily education
- Passing examination is not being educated
- Education is neither accumulation of words nor the amount of information in the brain and it is not filling the mind with a lot of facts.
These statements I quite agree with because according to United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Education should be based on four fundamental pillars: Learning to know, learning to do ,learning to live together and learning to be.(unesdoc.unesco.org).
So what is Education? Education is holistic, it equips an individual/citizens with the required knowledge, values, skills. It develops mind, character and capacity to be able to solve problems and socialize amicably; contribute meaningfully. It involves assimilation of ideas and making those ideas your life and character. Education is a weapon, an unseen and silent one but has the greatest impact on any individual or nation.
From how we develop, how we deal daily with life and what comes with it, and how we excel in every walk of life depends towards national development. In summary, true education lies in the integrity of its values as enshrined in individuals and the society at large. It is a thin line between developed and third world nations. That is why no nation or leader should treat the issue of education with kid gloves.
