Queen Imelda James, Miss Health beauty pageant Nigeria 2019/2020, has distributed six wheelchairs to people living with disabilities in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Delta to cushion their challenges.
James disclosed this in an interview with Newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.
The ambassador of health also said that assorted food items such as Maggi, vegetable oil, Noddles and drinks among others were equally distributed to indigent people in the areas.
She said that the donation was to mark the “End of the year health campaign and charity outreach” to people living with disabilities.
The beneficiaries of the donation included Miss Oluwatosi Yusuf, a girl with intellectual disability in Gwagwalada and Mrs Kemi Babalola, a resident of Centage Estate, Apo Dutse, FCT.
Others were Miss Ngozi Ossai and Madam Oseji at the Queens’ maternal home town Umuseti Oliogo Utagba -Uno, Ndokwa West LGA, Delta and another to St. Mary’s Catholic Hospital, Gwagwalada among other beneficiaries.
The health advocate said that she had the passion to reach out to people in need, hence the reason for the donation.
She also expressed a passion to create more awareness on health issues to prevent health-related fatalities due to the lack of knowledge.
“I noticed that people living with disabilities are somehow being neglected in the society, they are not being taken care of. This is why I decided to reach out to them.
“Also going forward, I will not only reach out to people living with disabilities but equally to the vulnerable, the less privileged, the orphans and the motherless children in the society.
“As an ambassador and advocate of health in Nigeria, it is my passionate desire that health awareness is provided through every means possible to prevent unfortunate and preventable health-related fatalities,” she said.
The queen, therefore, pleaded with governments at all levels to take issues of people living with disabilities seriously and do more in helping them.
“Well-to-do Nigerians should assist me in reaching out to persons with disabilities because there are still a lot of them out there who need assistance.
“And, a little of your contribution can go a long way towards helping them,” she added.
She said that all her reach outs had been family-sponsored and some contributions from her friends on social media.
She, therefore, called for sponsorships and supports from spirited Nigerians and donor agencies to enable her to achieve the noble cause and better health awareness in Nigeria and humanity.
Similarly, the queen’s parents said that they supported her because her office provided an opportunity to help the less privileged and “it has been fulfilling for the entire family to always donate to this cause.
The mother of one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Abidoun Yusuf, expressed joy over the gesture, saying that her daughter would no longer be stuck in the house.
“She loves to go out and play with others but there was no means for her but with this wheelchair, she can go to church with us and play around with her peers,’’ she added.
The girl’s father, Mr Yusuf Abdulrazaq, amid surprise expressed his profound gratitude to queen and her family for the good they had done his daughter.
Abdulrazaq, therefore, prayed that, good things would not depart from the family while wishing the queen more exploits in her life endeavours.
