The Maldives is investigating the death of a fisherman who had received the Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine, local media reported on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old fisherman while receiving the COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, was reported to have been unwell and brought to a health centre on Tuesday.

“As per protocol, a full investigation is being carried out to confirm the cause of his death,” the Health Protection Agency said in a statement on the social media platform Twitter.

The agency noted that serious events including death could happen unrelatedly to the vaccine.

The Maldives kicked off its vaccination drive in early February with over 165,600 people being administered the first vaccine dose as of Tuesday.
