Court refers alleged defamation case to police

An Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Tuesday referred alleged defamation case preferred against a landlady, Lydia Yakubu to the police for proper investigation.

Yakubu was charged with six counts boarding on criminal trespass, mischief, defamation of character, intimidation, threat to life and disturbance of public peace.

The Judge, Sani Umar in his ruling ordered that the matter be properly investigated and the findings reported back to the court within one month.

Umar adjourned the case until March 15 for report of findings.

The claimant's Counsel, Ayam Micheal told the court that the complainant, Mallam Bonbonyi, is a businessman and a native doctor who resides in Chukuku Village Kuje, Abuja.

Ayam said that the complainant was a tenant in the defendant's house which rent has not expired till date.

He said that sometime in November 2021, the defendant trespassed into the complainant's premises, climbed his roof and removed some bundles of zinc and ceilings.

He said that the removal of the zincs and ceilings caused alot of damages and destruction of the complainant's property such as television set (plasma), clothes, mattress, fan, DVD players among others valued N1 million.

He said that the defendant called the complainant a criminal, ritualist and s vagabond.

Ayam said that the complainant has continued to stay in the house without a roof, adding that the defendant had no court order to remove the roof.

He said that the complainant was seeking for the Prosecution, conviction of the defendant for the above mentioned offences and an order restraining her from further harassment and intimidation.

He said that the offence contravened the provision of sections 95, 343, 326, 391, 397 and 396 of the Penal Code.
