Six Hungarian opposition parties are to join ranks in an attempt to unseat Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his right-wing Fidesz Party in 2022 parliamentary elections, according to an agreement struck.
The alliance covers a broad spectrum of parties that includes: the left-liberal Democratic Coalition and the Hungarian Socialist Party.
Others are: the environmentalist party Politics Can Be Different, the liberal Momentum party and the right-wing party Jobbik.
In recent months, the parties had agreed that they would jointly present candidates for top jobs as well as present joint candidates in individual single-mandate constituencies.
According to the latest opinion polls, the united opposition list has a chance of succeeding.
A survey conducted by Median last week showed the opposition’s alliance in the lead with 41 per cent voter support, ahead of Fidesz’s 39.
The parties stressed that the aim of the alliance is “to create an independent, livable and proud Hungary.”
