The University of Benin Teaching Hospital has begun activities marking World Oral Health Day, offering a 50 per cent reduction on selected dental services to encourage residents to prioritise proper oral care.

The Chief Medical Director, Idia Ize-Iyamu, announced the initiative on Monday in Benin, while inaugurating the 2026 observance at the hospital in Benin City, saying the programme aimed to improve dental health awareness among residents.

She said discounted dental services would be available at the hospital’s dental clinic from Monday to Thursday as part of activities leading to the global World Oral Health Day observance on March 20.

According to her, the initiative is designed to promote oral health awareness and improve access to essential dental care, enabling more patients to receive timely treatment and maintain healthier oral hygiene habits.

Under the programme, patients will receive reduced charges for procedures including scaling and polishing, tooth extractions, glass ionomer cement restorations and dental radiographs at the hospital’s dental clinic.

Ize-Iyamu said the initiative aligned with efforts by dental professionals to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking early treatment for preventable dental conditions.

She commended members of the Nigerian Dental Association for promoting oral health awareness, describing the turnout for the awareness walk as encouraging and a strong demonstration of commitment by dental professionals.

The 2026 World Oral Health Day celebration is themed “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life,” highlighting the connection between oral health and overall wellbeing while encouraging people to seek regular dental care.
