The Day is mark on Sept. 29, to raise awareness about Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) – the leading cause of death globally and a growing concern in Nigeria.
He said the CVDs caused nearly 18 million deaths globally each year (about 31 per cent of all deaths).
Tijjani highlighted that in Nigeria, one in four adults is at risk of developing coronary artery disease, adding that most heart-related deaths are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices.
He listed unhealthy diet (too much salt, sugar and saturated fat); physical inactivity, tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, chronic stress and poor sleep as major risk factors of CVDs.
To remedy the disease, Tijjani advised Nigerians to eat more fruits; vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, stay active with at least 30 minutes of exercise most days, quit smoking, limit alcohol use, check their blood pressure and cholesterol regularly, as well as manage stress and get enough rest.
