The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has urged political parties to desist from holding unauthorised political rallies in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfom John said in a statement in Uyo on Monday that police approval was required for any political rally to hold.

John said that the command had received credible information about plans to hold two different rallies in the state on March 28 by groups identified as the Village Boys Movement and Renewed Hope Ambassadors.

The PPRO said that the police had not granted approvals for such rallies that were already being publicised on the social media.

She urged political parties in the state to adhere strictly to the guidelines established by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Defaulters of INEC guidelines will be sanctioned accordingly. Any attempt to proceed with these unauthorised gatherings will attract the intervention of law enforcement agencies.

“It is absolutely vital that political activities should comply with the timelines and guidelines established by INEC.

“Political campaigns can only commence within the designated periods specified by INEC,” she said.

John said that the command would not tolerate any actions capable of threatening public peace and security.

She warned that any group or individual found to be organising or participating in unauthorised rallies would face legal consequences.

“The command therefore urges the organisers of these rallies to cease any further planning until proper authorisation is obtained from the police.
