The Cross River Local Government Service Commission has assured Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) of equal opportunities, including employment in the state.

The Commission’s chairman, Mr Darlington Eyo, gave the assurance when members of the Association of the Deaf paid him a visit on Tuesday in Calabar.

Eyo stated that physical disability does not take away one’s capabilities and capacity to think and perform certain tasks.

He noted that sign language as a means of communication must be explored.

Eyo promised that he would integrate sign language as a means of communication in council areas of the state.

The commission’s chairman, however, stressed the urgent need for sign language experts to be trained for effective public communication.

“Physical disability does not limit an individual’s ability to think, work, or contribute meaningfully to society.

“Disability is a condition, not an incapacity, and I pledge that the commission will continue to provide a level playing field for all qualified individuals.

“As for sign language, it is a critical tool for public communication, and I advocate for more trained sign language experts across government institutions to promote inclusivity”, he said.

Earlier, Mr Anthony Oduyaya, the chairman of the association, who spoke through a sign language expert, called for inclusion through employment opportunities.

Oduyaya also disclosed that the association’s membership was made up of highly educated individuals who could perform given responsibilities without limitations.

He commended the impactful leadership of Gov. Bassey Otu in creating jobs for the unemployed in the state.
