Methodist Archbishop, Sunday Onuoha, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to allow Nigeria slip into a one-party state, warning it would betray public trust and weaken democracy.

Onuoha said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.

The Cleric, also the Africa Ministries INC founder, stressed the need to preserve multi-party democracy and called on the president to safeguard democratic values and traditions.

“President Tinubu has long been recognised as a steadfast advocate of democracy.

“It will be a betrayal of public trust if any of his advisers were to influence him into embracing the dictatorial tendencies of a one-party state,” he said.

The Archbishop stressed the role of Tinubu’s advisers in steering governance, advising them against pushing the president toward policies that could erode democratic principles.

He maintained that Nigeria’s democratic system could only thrive through diversity of parties, and opinions, adding that pluralism remained the bedrock of the country’s political stability.

“A multi-party system is both healthy and essential for the survival and growth of our democracy.

“Leaders must remain committed to democratic principles and avoid any actions that could weaken public confidence in our institutions,” he said.

He called on political leaders across party lines to prioritise national interest above partisan gains, stating that the sustainability of democracy depended on inclusive governance.
