Abbas restates commitment to reinvigorating Nigeria’s agric. sector

The Speaker of House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, has restated the commitment of the House to reinvigorating the country’s agricultural sector for economic transformation.

Abbas said this while declaring open, a public hearing on 11 bills seeking to establish colleges of agriculture across the country on Monday in Abuja.

The speaker, represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Rep. Ibrahim Isiaka, said that the bills were reflections of their determination to restructure the country’s economy through agriculture.

According to him, each of the bills encapsulates a transformative and reproductive agricultural system.

He reassured of the House’s resolve to continue to promote the agriculture, saying that legislative intent must match executive efficiency and community engagement for progress.

Also speaking, the Chairman, House Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, Rep. Abiodun Akinlade, described colleges of agriculture as pathways to achieving food security.

Akinlade recalled that agriculture was the main stay of Nigeria’s economy before the discovery of crude oil, stressing the need to return to it.

He explained that the country at the moment needed more colleges of agriculture to tackle food insecurity and create jobs for the teeming youths.

Akinlade who commended the committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions for work well done, said that the public hearing was avenue to share ideas for legislative progress.

He expressed the imperatives of embracing agriculture in order to address the challenges of food insecurity and hunger.
