Ukraine Invasion: Leaders of Italy, France discuss Ukraine ahead of EU summit

Draghi and Macron discussed the current situation in Ukraine following the start of Russia’s military operation in the country, and its consequences for the European economy.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke over the phone on Wednesday to discuss the crisis in Ukraine ahead of the European Council summit later this week.

The Italian media reported, citing the government.

Draghi and Macron discussed the current situation in Ukraine following the start of Russia's military operation in the country, and its consequences for the European economy.

The ANSA news agency reported, citing a statement issued by Italy's government.

On Tuesday, Washington decided to ban all Russian energy imports as part of sanctions against Moscow in response to the military operation in Ukraine.

London said it would halt oil imports from Russia by the end of this year.

The European Council summit would take place in Paris on Thursday and Friday.

On Feb. 24, Russia began a special operation to demilitarize and "denazify" Ukraine, responding to calls for help from the Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics in countering the aggression of Ukrainian troops.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the special operation was targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only and the civilian population is not in danger.
