EU Commission working on practical modalities to ban RT, Sputnik

The European Commission is working on practical modalities to ensure the ban on Sputnik news agency and RT broadcaster in the European Union amid Russia's military operation in Ukraine.

The European Commission spokesman, Eric Mamer said on Monday.

On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the organisation would ban RT and Sputnik in the EU in order to prevent state-owned Russian media from spreading.

"In relation to RT and Sputnik we are currently working on the practical modalities to ensure that these decisions can be implemented, obviously, this is a decision that concerns the territory of the EU,'' Mamer sai9d.

In the early hours of Feb. 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, responding to calls from the Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics for help.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the operation was targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only, stressing that the civilian population is not in danger.
