The Albanian Constitutional Court has suspended impeachment proceedings against President Ilir Meta, accused of violating Albania's constitution last year..

With the decision, which the court published late Wednesday, it has annulled a parliamentary resolution last June, which ruled that Meta be removed from office for the alleged violation.

The Albanian president's term expires July this year.

The case against Meta was based on his enmity with socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been accused of tending towards authoritarian rule.

The decision was taken by an almost exclusive socialists parliament following an opposition boycott of parliamentary proceedings.

Meta belonged to the Socialist Party as Rama, who now leads the party that the president left in 2004.

He then founded a small social-liberal party, which is headed by his wife Monika Kryemadhi.

In 2017 however, Meta was elected president by socialists of the parliament.

The relationship between Meta and Rama, who has been in power since 2013, continued to deteriorate.
